“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” – I Corinthians 13:11

From the spiritual perspective, becoming a man from childhood is not automatic; there has to be a “putting away” of childish things.  This is what growth entails.  Few characteristics of childishness are; ignorance or innocence, irresponsibility, carelessness, reluctance or refusal do what is right except being told or sometimes coerced.

For instance, two key factors to a successful marriage are; God factor and responsibility factor.  God factor is constant; He has not changed, He will not change because He cannot change.  Malachi 3:6.  The variable is the “responsibility factor”, which is man’s.  Where there are two natural adults (male and female) in marriage with either or the two of them, spiritual baby or babies; there is bound to be struggle, strive, turmoil and eventually, dissolution.

This is the reason for challenges in many marriages today.  The husband that has not put away childish thing will find it difficult to obey the simple scriptural family government rules of loving his wife or giving honor to her.  Ephesians 5:25; I Peter 3:7.  He may even be playing games of sexual perversion simply because he is ignorant of the consequences.

The wife on the other hand, who has not put away childish things may consider it an impossible task to submit to her own husband as the simple scriptural family government rule demands.  Ephesians 5:22-24.  Just like the Bible says:

“Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” – Proverbs 22:15

A wife that has not put away childish things can scatter, break and destroy her own home as a result of spiritual foolishness simply because she refused to grow spiritually.  The Bible says:

“Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.” – Proverbs 14:1

The groaning of many people under the pressure of marital turmoil can easily be avoided if couples would accept responsibility to grow.

You cannot afford the pains identified with the groaning under spiritual growth deficiency.  The only way out of it is to grow.  Anyone that chooses not to grow spiritually has inadvertently chosen to groan spiritually, mentally and physically.

Prayer and fasting are key factors to growing up spiritually.  Bishop David Abioye says:

If you don’t want to faint, pray! – Luke 18:1

If you don’t want to fail, pray! – Luke 22:32

If you don’t want to fall, pray! – Matthew 26:41
