“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” – I John 4:8

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” – I John 4:16

God is Love!  We can successfully replace the word God anywhere in the Bible with Love and we would not have changed anything.  For instance, let us take the first three verses of scriptures:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” – Genesis 1:1-3

“In the beginning Love created the heaven and the earth…and the Spirit of Love moved upon the face of the waters.  And Love said…”

Brethren, no wonder that everything in God’s kingdom answers to love!  Love is the greatest!  I Corinthians 13:1-3, 13.  Love begins with a choice!  Choice is a function of man’s decision.  The Love under consideration which is the nature of God is a giving, sacrificial and selfless love.  Many people will be excited to receive love but few people want to give love.  The Bible defines love as:

“Love endures with patience and serenity, love is kind and thoughtful, and is not jealous or envious; love does not brag and is not proud or arrogant. It is not rude; it is not self-seeking, it is not provoked [nor overly sensitive and easily angered]; it does not take into account a wrong endured. It does not rejoice at injustice but rejoices with the truth [when right and truth prevail]. Love bears all things [regardless of what comes], believes all things [looking for the best in each one], hopes all things [remaining steadfast during difficult times], endures all things [without weakening]. Love never fails [it never fades nor ends]. But as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for the gift of special knowledge, it will pass away.” – I Corinthians 13:4-8 (Amplified Bible)

Friends, every believer born of God is actually born of love.  We can take it further by choosing to walk in love.  It begins with sacrificially giving our lives to God (this is not talking about responding to Altar call for salvation or rededication); it is about pleasing God in our thoughts, words and actions.  It continues with living a sacrificial life towards our neighbor.  Jesus Christ said:

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12:30-31

Dr. David Abioye defined this love as “passion for God and the interest of His kingdom and compassion for man”.  The Love nature of God actually makes a “god” of a mortal man.  A believer’s choice to love can be powered by the Holy Spirit.  Romans 5:5.  The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Love; the fruit of love in a believer (outward manifestation) is on the platform of the believer’s choice to love on the one hand and willingness to be helped to love (by the Holy Spirit) on the other hand.  Galatians 5:22.  Whatever figure (irrespective of the digits) that is multiplied by zero will always equal zero!  The love of God can be shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit only on the platform of our choice to love!

Dr. David Oyedepo asserts that a believer’s love for God must be “above all else including self”.  This is a revelation from Matthew 6:33.  We are called to seek God and the interest of His kingdom first not even self-first but some believers may have reversed this.  Then to love our neighbors as ourselves.

The love sacrificial love content in any believer defines the God content in the believer.  If we give all to God; He gives all to us in return.  However, in your compassion for men, you may be taken for granted; you may be bruised and you may be “roughened”.  Never mind, because, love cannot fail; the lover cannot fail too!

All things will work together for your good.  Romans 8:28.  The good things that eyes have not seen and ears have not heard will begin to happen in your life and family as you deliberately submit yourself to this greatest virtue of the kingdom of God.
